California is recognised throughout the USA for having an incredible variety of fresh, seasonal produce, and Los Angeles farmers markets are is where you’ll find some of the freshest produce in the state. Whether you’re looking to buy top quality produce or get tips on how to start your own vegetable garden, Los Angeles farmers markets have something for everyone.
Every farmers market you visit will be a culinary adventure, giving you the opportunity to taste, see, and learn about Los Angeles’ farm-fresh produce straight from the people who grow it. Super-sweet peaches, just picked strawberries, wildflower honey, artisanal cheeses and local olive oils are just a small selection of the delicious produce you can expect to see at Los Angeles farmers markets.
While amazing markets are hosted weekly all over the state, we’ve hand-picked our favourites from the LA area.
Hollywood Farmers Market
Hollywood Blvd & Ivar Street, Hollywood, CA 90028
Located in the heart of Tinseltown, this farmers market has been booming since 1991. Farmers and producers of dried fruits, nuts, coffee, fresh juices, baked goods and a variety of ethnic foods come together to put on a fantastic showcase of local agricultural delights. You’ll be able to buy meat, fish, honey and artisan cheeses, too. Grocery shopping is hungry work, and a trip to the Hollywood farmers market wouldn’t be complete without taking home some of the prepared foods on offer, like tamales, fresh crepes and salads.
Every Sunday 8:00am until 1:00pm
Encino Farmers Market
17400 Victory Blvd, Van Nuys, CA 91406
Another jewel in the crown that is Los Angles farmers markets and certified no less is the Encino Farmers market where you’ll be able to take home some great California-grown produce including artisanal cheeses, eggs, meats, honey and loads more. During peak season – between May and November – there can be as many as 40 farms from the surrounding area showcasing their goods at the market. One thing we love is that around a third of the farms here practice completely organic farming methods.
Every Sunday from 8:00am until 1:00pm
Altadena Farmers Market
600 W. Palm St., Altadena, CA 91101
This market features some of the area’s most cutting-edge farmers. Many of the vendors at Altadena Farmers Market use hydroponic growing techniques to create an all-year round growing season. You’ll find lots of fresh, juicy berries as well as organic, wild-fermented foods packed full of live, active cultures which are incredible for your health. If you’re looking for something else, don’t worry, there’s still a huge choice of fresh produce, fresh oysters, and a guy who’ll sharpen your knives.
Spring/Summer – 4:00pm until 8:00pm Fall/Winter – 3:00pm until 7:00pm
Brentwood Farmers Market
741 Gretna Green Way, Los Angeles, CA 90049
Every Sunday, at the south end of San Vicente, the finest local producers and vendors pitch up their stalls to offer fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, cage-free eggs, baked goods, antioxidant rich micro-greens and even those difficult-to-find Asian vegetables. This market has a mission statement to “ensure an environment where genuine California Farmers can sell their fresh picked fruits and vegetables directly to the community” so by coming to this market, you’re supporting your local farmers. A double win!
I’ve saved the most important information until last – samples are given out liberally, so bring your appetite.
